Face Cleansing Steps at Home: A Complete Guide

Learn the correct face cleansing steps at home, including direction, pressure, and order. Covers oily, dry, and sensitive skin, plus steam and face yoga.

The best face cleansing steps at home are the ones that respect your skin’s natural barrier and lymphatic system. You don’t need a spa or expensive products — just the right order, the right pressure, and the right direction. Here’s how to do it properly, based on the same principles I teach in the MEWAI app.

The Basic Face Cleansing Steps at Home

Start with clean hands. Then follow this order every time:

  1. Remove makeup and sunscreen with an oil-based cleanser or micellar water. Massage gently in circles, then rinse with lukewarm water.
  2. Wash with a water-based cleanser suited to your skin type. Work it into a lather and apply to damp skin, moving in upward, outward circles from the center of your face toward your ears. Rinse thoroughly.
  3. Pat dry — don’t rub. Rubbing pulls at the skin and can cause irritation.
  4. Apply toner with a cotton pad, sweeping outward and upward.
  5. Moisturize while skin is still slightly damp to lock in hydration.

That’s the core routine. But the details matter: the direction you move your hands, the pressure you use, and how you handle different skin types.

Direction and Pressure: The Two Rules That Matter

Your lymphatic system drains toward the lymph nodes, which sit in front of and behind your ears, under your jaw, and at your collarbone. So the organizing rule for cleansing and any facial massage is: outward from the center of the face, toward the ear — not downward.

  • Forehead and brow: stroke up and out, from between your brows toward your temples.
  • Under-eyes, cheeks, jaw: stroke horizontally outward toward your ears.
  • Neck: always stroke downward, toward your collarbone. This is the one place where “never upward” applies, and it’s the exit route for everything you’ve moved off your face.

Pressure should be light — a glide, not a massage. Never press hard enough to bruise or cause discomfort. When using a gua sha stone, hold it almost flat against the skin, not on its edge, and always glide over oil or cream, never on bare skin.

Face Cleansing Steps at Home for Oily Skin

If your skin is oily, you might be tempted to scrub hard or skip moisturizer. Don’t. Over-cleansing strips your skin and makes it produce more oil.

  • Use a gentle foaming cleanser with salicylic acid or tea tree oil, but only once a day — in the evening. In the morning, just rinse with water or use a very mild cleanser.
  • Exfoliate once or twice a week with a chemical exfoliant (like BHA) instead of a physical scrub. Move in the same outward direction as your cleanser.
  • Finish with a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer. Your skin still needs hydration.

Face Cleansing Steps at Home for Dry Skin

Dry skin needs more moisture, not more washing.

  • Use a creamy, non-foaming cleanser that doesn’t strip natural oils.
  • Wash with lukewarm water, not hot, which can dry out your skin further.
  • Apply a rich moisturizer immediately after patting dry, while skin is still damp.
  • Consider a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid before your moisturizer.

Face Cleansing Steps at Home with Steam

Steaming can be a lovely addition to your home facial, but it’s not for everyone. If you have rosacea or very sensitive skin, skip it.

  • Fill a bowl with hot water (not boiling) and lean over it with a towel over your head to trap the steam. Keep your face at least 12 inches away to avoid burning.
  • Steam for no more than 5–10 minutes. This softens the skin and opens pores, making cleansing more effective.
  • After steaming, cleanse immediately with your usual cleanser, then follow with a mask if you like, then moisturize.

Facial Exercises at Home: How to Do Face Yoga

Face yoga is a great complement to cleansing, but it’s not a replacement for it. Here’s how to do it safely:

  • Always do face yoga on clean, moisturized skin — never on bare, dry skin, which can pull and cause wrinkles.
  • Use light pressure with your fingers, and always move outward from the center of the face, following the same direction rules as cleansing.
  • Focus on one area at a time: brow and forehead, eye area, cheeks and mid-face, and neck.
  • Keep sessions short — five minutes a day is enough. Consistency beats intensity.

In MEWAI, we guide you through specific exercises for each area, with a daily five-minute session. The app uses your selfie scan to tailor the routine to your face, and you can re-scan weekly to track progress.

What This Does NOT Do

Let’s be clear: no facial cleansing routine, face yoga, or gua sha can eliminate deep wrinkles, tighten sagging skin dramatically, or change your bone structure. It can improve circulation, reduce puffiness, and help your skin look healthier and more rested. But if you’re expecting a facelift, you’ll be disappointed. Also, cleansing alone won’t treat acne or other skin conditions — for that, you need appropriate skincare products or a dermatologist.

Putting It All Together: A Simple Home Facial Routine

Here’s a step-by-step home facial that combines cleansing, steaming, and face yoga:

  1. Cleanse your face with your usual cleanser.
  2. Steam for 5–10 minutes (optional).
  3. Exfoliate gently if your skin type allows (1–2 times a week).
  4. Apply a mask if you like, then rinse.
  5. Tone and moisturize.
  6. Do face yoga for 5 minutes, following the direction rules.
  7. Finish with a facial massage using your hands or a gua sha stone, gliding outward and upward on the face, and downward on the neck.

Remember: the goal is consistency, not perfection. A simple routine done daily beats an elaborate one done rarely.

How to Get Rid of Bags at Home

Bags under the eyes are usually fluid and lymph pooling overnight, not fat. You can move that fluid out in a few minutes, but only if you work in the right direction and keep pressure light.

  1. Start with clean, damp skin. Apply a few drops of facial oil or eye cream so your fingers or a gua sha stone glide, never drag.
  2. Drain the under-eye area first. Place your ring finger at the inner corner of the eye, just below the lash line. Glide horizontally outward toward the temple, ending at the lymph node in front of the ear. Repeat 3–5 times per eye. Do not press hard — the skin here is thin and bruises easily.
  3. Clear the temple and ear node. From the outer corner of the eye, glide down the temple to just in front of the ear. This is the exit route.
  4. Finish on the neck. Always stroke downward, from under the jaw to the collarbone, 3–5 times per side. This is how the fluid you moved off the face actually leaves.
  5. Do this in the morning, when puffiness is worst, and keep the whole routine under two minutes.

What not to do: don’t rub the under-eye area back and forth, don’t press hard enough to feel the bone, and never stroke upward on the neck — that pushes fluid back toward the face.

How to Do Face Yoga at Home

Face yoga is not about holding exaggerated expressions. It’s about controlled, repeated movement that works the muscles under the skin, and it follows the same direction rules as cleansing.

  • Prep: Cleanse and moisturize first. Bare, dry skin pulls and can create creases.
  • Brow and forehead: Place your index and middle fingers at the center of your forehead, just above the brows. Glide up and out toward the temples, then lift the brows gently against your fingers. Hold for 3 seconds, release. Repeat 5 times.
  • Eye area: Make a peace sign with your index and middle fingers, place them at the outer corners of your eyes, and gently sweep outward toward the temples. Then, with the same fingers, press lightly at the outer corner and squint the lower eyelid upward, as if smiling with your eyes. Hold 3 seconds, release. Repeat 5 times.
  • Cheeks and mid-face: Place your palms flat on your cheeks, fingers pointing toward your ears. Glide horizontally outward, then lift the cheek muscles against your palms by smiling widely. Hold 3 seconds, release. Repeat 5 times.
  • Neck: Always move downward. Place your fingers at the base of your jaw and glide down the sides of your neck to your collarbone. Then, with your chin lifted, press your tongue to the roof of your mouth and feel the neck muscles engage. Hold 3 seconds, release. Repeat 5 times.

Keep the whole session to five minutes. Do it once a day, every day — consistency matters more than doing it for longer on weekends.

In MEWAI, the daily session is built around these same four areas, and the app uses your selfie scan to adjust the routine to your face. You re-scan weekly and compare progress photos side by side, so you’re measuring change, not guessing at it. Your photos stay on your device and are never uploaded.

Common questions

How often should I do facial cleansing steps at home?

Cleanse twice a day: once in the morning and once in the evening. In the morning, a gentle cleanse is enough. In the evening, you need to remove makeup, sunscreen, and the day's buildup. Over-cleansing can strip your skin, so stick to twice daily.

Can I do face yoga every day?

Yes, five minutes a day is ideal. Consistency is more important than duration. Just make sure your skin is clean and moisturized, and use light pressure to avoid pulling at the skin.

What is the correct direction for facial massage?

Always move outward from the center of the face toward your ears, following the lymphatic drainage path. On the neck, always move downward toward the collarbone. Never stroke upward on the neck.

Do I need a gua sha stone to get results?

No. Every technique works with bare hands. A gua sha stone can enhance the experience, but it's not necessary. If you use one, always glide over oil or cream, and keep the pressure light.

How long until I see results from face yoga?

Results vary, but many people notice reduced puffiness and a more relaxed look within a few weeks of daily practice. For long-term changes, consistency over months is key. Take weekly photos to compare, as changes are gradual.
